On 16th February, 1916, 13th Middlesex of 73 Brigade, 24th Division relieved 9th Sussex in the front line at Hooge in the Ypres salient. At 3.15pm on 17th February, 1916, the enemy shelled H16 section of trench with about 40, 4.2inch High Explosive shells. One of these made a direct hit on a machine gun emplacement and 4 men were killed and another 4 wounded. The Battalion Diary seems to be more concerned with the fact that the Lewis gun was undamaged than with the casualties. One of those killed was Walter Baker. |
